Lack of quorum prevents Mlamleli announcement

Drama ruled on Friday evening in the Mangaung Metro Council meeting in the Free State during the vote of no-confidence motion brought against the embattled executive mayor.

OFM News reports that, this followed after Olly Mlamleli was finally ousted from her position as the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metro when secret ballots were approved for voting on the motion of no confidence brought by the Freedom Front Plus.

However, in a turn of events, Council Speaker Mxolisi Siyonzana failed to declare the results. This, as the council could not form a quorum for her to officially declare the results to remove Mlamleli.

According to opposition parties, including the FF Plus, DA, and EFF, the council could not form the quorum because council members had already left the sitting before the official announcement could be made by the speaker.

The DA’s Mokgadi Kganakga previously told OFM News that 31 Councillors voted for Mlamleli’s removal while 28 opposed it, and 8 spoiled their votes.

She said Mlamleli was voted out through a secret ballot after Siyonzana accepted the bid to vote via secret ballot. The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) proposed the motion against Mlamleli, who previously survived at least two such motions after the DA’s motion of no confidence failed in early February.
