Bloemfontein. – The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs today announced the closure of Krugersdrift Dam and Olive Hills Recreational and Angling Areas at the Soetdoring Nature Reserve, until further notice.
According to the department’s Thabang Selemela, the water levels are very low, fish are dying and the ablution facilities needs upgrading. A research team from the department is also conduction tests to ascertain why fish are dying.
He did however reiterate that they would not want these facilities to be closed for too long a period, and they will do all in their power to have the facilities up and running as soon as possible.
"The water level is deadly low and fish are dying in large numbers and we don’t know why. We have serious problems of people vandalising the ablution facilities and we don’t have ablution facilities at the moment. It is also not something we had budgeted for in the current financial year," Selemela said.
