Duane Petrus – The Health Professions Council of South Africa will conduct investigations next year to determine whether or not disciplinary processes will be carried out against a Bloemfontein doctor who stands accused of rape.
Two patients reported rape cases against the doctor last year, which allegedly took place in his surgery, while they were sedated.
The National Prosecution Authority withdrew one of the charges against him in June this year, because they saw no prospect of a successful prosecution on that charge.
The council confirmed that the investigation will take place on 19 and 20 January, and the doctor is currently still an active member of the HPCSA.
If he is found guilty in the outcome of the investigation, the doctor could face a number of penalties ranging from removal from the register, a fine or a caution.
The former Kovsie student was previously fined abroad after he admitted to having a sexual relationship with an underage patient.
Meanwhile, he will go on trial in the Bloemfontein High court from 23 to 27 March next year.
