The Free State Department of Water and Sanitation says there has been a drop in dam levels in the province over the last month.
The Department’s provincial head, Tseliso Ntili says dam levels in the province are currently at 72%, despite the recent rainfall. He says they can therefor not lift water restrictions.
Ntili added that the department is also faced with issues like aging infrastructure, a lack of resources and maintenance. He says a collective effort is needed to solve the problems. Ntili says they are monitoring the areas in the province that do not adhere to the water restrictions.
“The time in which we got our rains, it was not a very good time. We really had a period where there was absolutely nothing. The water we have in our dams, we need to safely store it and again ask our users not to waste water,” says Ntili.
