Free State Human Settlements faces enormous housing backlog

The Free State Human Settlements Department has acknowledged that it faces an enormous housing backlog amidst complaints by residents of informal settlements around Bloemfontein.

The Department’s MEC, Sisi Ntombela, told Courant that it is facing challenges with regard to the construction of houses in informal settlements. She, however, says housing backlogs are a national issue, adding that the Department is dealing with the matter and will fast-track the building of houses in the province.

“It is not only in Bloemfontein, it is all over. We are trying our level best to make sure that people get houses. In fact, in Bloemfontein, we have built many houses. It is not only people of Bloemfontein who need houses, it is all over the country.”

Ntombela says residents of informal settlements should be aware that there is a long list of people awaiting their houses countrywide.
