Fire truck overturns on wet Bfn Road

Firemen from the Mangaung Fire Department were injured when the fire truck they were travelling in slipped on a wet Kenneth Kaunda Road and overturned.
The firemen were rushing to an accident scene on the Bultfontein road this afternoon when the fire truck overturned. The accident in which several firemen were injured, happened at around 13:30, just a few hundred metres from the Northridge Mall in the north of Bloemfontein. No fatalities were reported by authorities.
When Bloemfontein Courant arrived at the scene minutes after the accident happened, traffic authorities had already cordoned-off a long stretch of the road. Traffic in both directions was directed via Deale Road.
According to a resident of Kenneth Kaunda Road, Alicia Connoway, the stretch of road in front of her house is notorious for the accidents that happens there frequently, especially in rainy weather.
“This is the umpteenth time that an accident like this happens on this very same spot since they completed this road new road. We suspect the contractors used material of inferior quality to build this road. We have complained to authorities many times before, but to no avail.
“Coincidentally, my daughter and I were looking through the window when we saw the fire truck approach the bend. We witnessed the whole accident,” she told Bloemfontein Courant.
Connoway, whose husband Jaco is also a fireman, says this is the 16th accident in recent months in Kenneth Kaunda Road. Two of these accidents had fatalities. – Pieter Delport
