Explosions at UFS possibly due to chemicals in drains

A chemical substance, possibly paint thinner, caused minor underground explosions in storm water drains on the outside between two buildings at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein Campus yesterday.

The UFS’s Lacea Loader says in a statement the main building, chemistry building and two other buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure. She says members of the Mangaung Fire and Rescue Services reacted swiftly.

The area was secured. The storm water drains were thoroughly flushed. No injuries were reported. According to Loader, the storm water drains on campus are separate from sewerage and other drainage systems, ensuring that no further explosions can occur in these systems.
