The DA in the Free State has laid charges of assault and intimidation against the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Olly Mlamleli, ANC members, as well as Community Work Programme employees for allegedly assaulting and intimidating the DA’s activists at a mayoral gathering in Bloemfontein today.
According to the DA’s provincial leader, Patricia Kopane, DA activists and councillors were thrown out and prohibited from attending the gathering.
Kopane says they will not take this lying down and will also lay charges with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
She says the ANC in the province does not respect any democratic values and there seems to be a lack of discipline amongst its leadership as well as its members.
Kopane says the public meeting was supposed to give members of the community a platform to voice their concerns, and for the mayor to update them on the state of the municipality and how she plans to deliver service.
The municipality is yet to respond to media enquiries into the matter. – Katleho Morapela/OFM News
