Bethlehem’s Goble Park Stadium was filled with eager spectators who came out in their numbers to watch Sasol Juventus and the Central University of Technology (CUT) go head to head in a football spectacular that kicked off the provincial play-off stage of the 2013 South African Breweries League (SABL) earlier this month .
This captivating match was followed by the equally anticipated encounter between Real Hearts and Mighty Wits.
Aimed at identifying and nurturing young soccer stars at grass roots level the SABL can be described as the largest SAFA football and development league in South Africa. A total of 18 SAB League teams (two teams per province), out of the 1 305 competing in the league, will be promoted to the SAFA second division league. The Free State victors were Real Hearts and CUT after winning the Free State leg of the SABL play offs resulting in their promotion to the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Second Division.
The 2013 SAB League season will culminate in the national championships to be held in Stellenbosch between 7 and 8 July 2013 with the best players from each province being selected to form representative squads, along with the team from the University Sports South Africa (USSA). This national championship will commence with a youth diversion programme intended to empower the youth with off-the-pitch skills, as well as encouraging them to have a continued positive outlook to the future.
