Correctional Services vehicle in accident on the way to court

The Department of Correctional Services in the Free State has confirmed that one of its vehicles, transporting a prisoner from Hoopstad to Bloemfontein, was involved in an accident outside the city this morning.

OFM News was on site where police, traffic officials and ambulance services attended to the accident scene on the Kenneth Kaunda Road in the direction of Bultfontein.

A Correctional Services vehicle overturned and landed on its side in a ditch. According to a passer-by, the accident happened at about 06:30 at the N1 Colesberg off-ramp.

OFM News has learnt three people – two officers and a prisoner – sustained minor injuries. Traffic officials were on the scene regulating traffic.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services’ spokesperson in the Free State and Northern Cape, Puleng Mokhoane, says the department is still waiting for details about the offender. “It is normal practice for offenders to be taken to court when they are due to appear.”

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.

Police spokesperson, Loraine Earl, says a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.
