Centlec has launched a 60-day general amnesty to address electricity meter tampering, illegal connections and unauthorised meter shifts in Mangaung.
The utility said the amnesty allows consumers involved in electricity-related irregularities to voluntarily come forward and regularise their accounts without facing penalties or criminal prosecution. According to Centlec, “participants who disclose tampering or illegal connections during the amnesty period will qualify for a waiver of fines and backdated billing penalties, with some cases subject to a reduced flat fee.”
Centlec teams will also carry out free normalisation of electricity connections and reseal affected meters. Participants will be granted immunity from prosecution for past electricity theft, provided they sign an acknowledgement of debt for future usage.
Customers wishing to participate must submit proof of home ownership, a valid identity document and a quotation of their electricity bill. A five-day waiting period will apply where meter boxes have been tampered with.
