A boot camp a day will keep the fat away

Residents from Batho location and the surrounding areas who want to lose weight or be fit in the New Year might just reach their goals this year with the help of the two fitness instructors who have recently started Kasi Health and Fitness, a new exercise club in the area.
A long-time employee at The Edge Gym in Fichardt Park, Pinkie Taunyane, said she has partnered with Nkosinathi Singonzo, who is also a health enthusiast and is well known to locals as an exercise instructor and runner.
The duo has decided to hold boot camp sessions at the Masenkeng area (opposite Batho Police Station), where locals who are hoping to get in shape can look forward to challenging sessions of body-weight squats and exercising with tyres, ropes and other tools and equipment as they set out to be better versions of themselves.
While she said many are intimidated by the thought of a boot camp session, she felt the need to pursue this kind of exercise. According to her everyone else is doing aerobics.
Through this initiative, Taunyane and Singonzo hope to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and exercise in the townships and challenge prevailing stereotypes on these two aspects of healthy living.
Even though her club is relatively new, she herself is not a newbie to fitness. In fact, her transformation and work at a gym is what inspired her to pursue this initiative. “It is my first time partnering with Nathi (Singonzo) but I have honestly been doing this on my own for close to three years now. It became a passion after I had lost over 14 kilograms. Since then, fitness has changed my life and I am using it to change the lives of others who are overweight,” the 38-year old Taunyane said.
Interested members will need to pay R100 for the whole month as a subscription, which will enable them to meet there and exercise for at least four times a week (Monday to Thursday). Members are also provided with a simple meal plan as a guideline on how to eat more healthily.
On her side, Taunyane said she and Singonzo will use the money to cover costs for using the area, which is municipal land and also to buy some of the equipment to be used during the exercise sessions. “We try to keep the prices as low as possible and often we have to pay for many things from our own pockets. So we’re also asking if there’s anyone reading this who can provide a sponsorship of some sort, we would appreciate it. Especially because sometimes we have social events with the members to boost morale and we need money for booking a venue or buying food and snacks and stuff like that,” she said.
While they have been struggling with some sponsorships, she added that Kenworth Spar has helped a lot in that it has allowed them to use their parking lot once a month as space where members can exercise, thus making it easier on them to use the money they pay daily to the municipality towards other necessities.
To join the new club or offer sponsorship to the duo, kindly call Pinky Taunyane at 073-451-9153.
