As part of the Motheo TVET College and Kreishandwerkerschaft (KH) in Germany’s partnership, the #ProudToBeTVET Roadshow aimed to celebrate and empower female artisan students at Motheo TVET College beyond Women’s Month.
According to the programme manager of the International Vocational Education and Training Partnership Programme, Katja Lommetz, the campaign that was launched in August provided a platform for talented women to showcase their skills, break barriers, and inspire future generations.
“Vocational education is a crucial part of one’s personal and social development. In Germany, there is a long-standing tradition called the journeyman’s travel or Wanderschaft, where newly trained artisans spend three years working in different companies and environments to further their knowledge and skills. Kreishandwerkerschaft (KH) has reinterpreted this concept, extending it beyond Germany to other regions of the world,” explained Lommetz.
She highlighted that passing on expertise and soft skills is a global responsibility that eventually transcends borders. “This philosophy deeply influences our initiatives, including the ProudToBeTVET Roadshow,” added Lommetz.
In order to inspire aspiring artisans particularly those working in traditionally male-dominated trades such as bricklaying, auto mechanics, boiler making, and welding, the college invited a few established entrepreneurs or practicing women to speak to the students.
“By bringing the campaign directly to the campuses, especially in rural areas like Thaba Nchu, we ensure that no student is left out of this movement. The campaign has evolved into a powerful movement, with more industry partners coming on board, and students actively participating in our social media initiatives like our “WIN YOUR PERSONAL PPE” and sharing the #proudtobeTVET,” she expressed.
If you would like to find out how you can be part of this movement, follow their activities on Facebook (Proudtobetvet) or on Instagram by searching the hashtag, #proudtobeTVET.
“For those interested in engaging with us and learning more about our partnership programmes, we would love to hear from you. Partnership is the biggest motivation for our international team at KH. With a hands-on mentality, KH contributes to sustainable development not only locally but also globally. We are always delighted to welcome craftsmen and women from all over the world. Please feel free to contact us to explore how we can work together,” concluded Lommetz.
