BARC Winter Outreach aims to bring warmth and shelter to township animals

As winter temperatures continue to drop in Bloemfontein, local animal welfare organisations are preparing to assist vulnerable township animals in need of warmth, shelter, and care.

BARC – Bloem Animal Rescue and Care, led by Hannalize van der Merwe, will host a Winter Outreach on  Saturday (16/5) in partnership with Kami Rescuewithlove and volunteers. The initiative aims to provide kennels, bedding, food, and education to pet owners in township communities.

During the outreach, the team hopes to distribute at least 15 kennels with bedding to animals without proper shelter.

“There is a huge need for kennels in the townships. Dogs sleep outside with no shelter and no bedding. Most often these dogs are tied on chains and cannot seek shelter for themselves,” she explains.

The organisation relies heavily on public support to continue its work. Kennel donations, pallets for building kennels, blankets, bedding, and food are all urgently needed.

“Without donations from the public and animal lovers, we cannot do much,” says Hannalize van der Merwe.

She encourages the community to continue helping where they can.
“There are people and animals that need you, you may just be the only one coming their way to help. Think of that, and just keep going.”

Locals who would like to assist can contact send a Whatsapp message to 084 402 9901.
