The Toyota Cheetahs will be hoping for a step-up from their flyhalf, Siya Masuku, as they prepare to face the Lions in Bloemfontein on Saturday in the Currie Cup.
Masuku’s game has been a off little off since his return from an elbow injury last month.
Before the Sharks-bound Masuku hyperextended his elbow in a warm-up game against the Sharks, the player landed a last minute penalty against Section Paloise to send the Cheetahs into the knockout rounds of the European Challenge Cup.
Masuku has already proven that he is a very special player indeed, but his confidence does look a little down at the moment.
The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that it is important to have their playmaker on song.
“In the match against the Sharks as well as the game against Western Province he didn’t have a good first half.
“It’s difficult for a team when your kingpin isn’t on song, but it’s also not just one players’ fault.
“I will sit down with Siya again. I had a talk with him after the game against the Sharks and he played a bit better against the Griffons – but that wasn’t a difficult game for him.
“He’s got to make a step-up otherwise it will be tough for us as a team and we need him to be at his best.
“From my side as a coach, it’s my job to try and help him. I will try and help him to get his confidence back and to do the things well that he can do. He is a very good player, but at the moment he is under par and I will help him.”
Saturday’s game between the Cheetahs and Lions at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 13:00.
