As part of the June 16 Youth Day commemoration, local movie screening platform 76 Cinema will host a screening of the documentary Everything Must Fall, inviting young people and community members to reflect on youth activism and social change.
While the day honours the courage and resilience of the youth involved in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, founder, Mpho Tau says the documentary was selected because it highlights similar determination shown by a new generation of young South Africans.
Everything Must Fall chronicles the 2015 student protest movement, including #FeesMustFall, #RhodesMustFall and campaigns against outsourcing at universities. The documentary features first-hand accounts from students and academics who were at the centre of these movements.
According to Tau, the screening aims to create a space for dialogue and reflection on issues affecting young people today.
“Through this screening, it is our way to pause, sit down and engage as youth about issues that affect and confront us.”
Youth and members of the public from across Bloemfontein are invited to attend the screening and participate in the conversation around the role of young people in shaping South Africa’s future.
Screening starts at 14:00 at the Waaihoek Wesleyan Church. Entry is free, and dressing in school uniform is optional.
