Stars desperate for a win

LEE KHOTLELE

Bloemfontein – Free State Stars are on a mission to turn their season around and want to collect maximum points in tonight’s PSL match against Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

The Free State-based side is under pressure to get positive results and a win will help them move out of the relegation zone for now.

Club spokesperson, Lebohang Maketa, told Courant Sport he is confident the team will perform well tonight.

“We are ready for the match. We have not been playing well, but we’re confident we will do well against Maritzburg United. It is not going to be easy, but we will fight.”

“I would be lying if I can say there is something we have planned to do, other than what we have been doing. We will be continuing with our plan; the same way we have started the league,” Maketa said.

United is yet to taste a victory against the Free State side. These sides met 10 times since 2009, with Stars winning six and the remaining ending in a draw.

The last time these sides met, Ea Lla Koto walked away with three points, thanks to goals from defender, Sadat Ouro-Akoriko and striker, Abdul-Basit.

Stars will meet United for the first time since the latter recruited former Ea Lla Koto coach, Steve Khompela.

Khompela’s men are 13th on the log with 20 points; three behind Stars. A win for them will only reduce the deficit between them and Black Aces to a point. However, they will remain where they are.

United are undefeated at home this year. They drew 2-all with Kaizer Chiefs and went on to defeat Moroka Swallows 1-0.

In their previous game at home, Stars walked away with a point after drawing one-all with Ajax Cape Town. However, Stars’ record away from home is not impressive, and United is hoping to capitalise on that.

They lost two consecutive away matches (to Platinum Stars and Pirates); conceding three goals and not finding the back of the net in the process. Their first and last away victory was achieved back in September against Golden Arrows.

Kick-off is at 19:30 tonight.
