Bloemfontein came alive on Saturday evening, and not just because it was the opening weekend of the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League season. The city’s heartbeat – football – was thumping again as Siwelele FC made their eagerly anticipated debut in South Africa’s top flight.
From early in the day, the streets of Rocklands were a blur of green and white. By the time kick-off arrived, the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium was a cauldron of song, banners, flags and torches. Close to 22,000 supporters packed the stands, many draped in the colours that for years defined Bloemfontein Celtic. On this day, those colours were reborn.
Siwelele FC did not disappoint. With passion in the stands and composure on the pitch, they produced a dream start, outclassing Lamontville Golden Arrows 3-1. Each goal sent waves of celebration rippling through the terraces, the crowd’s famous Phunya Sele Sele chants echoing into the late night.
For head coach Lehlohonolo Seema – a Celtic legend now guiding the new Siwelele era – the victory was about more than just three points.
“Special thanks to the supporters – they pushed us even more,” Seema said afterwards, still beaming. “The game was swinging towards Golden Arrows at one stage, but they kept singing. At some point, they even switched on their torches, and the players could see just how much the support meant. It helped them a lot.”
It was a start that hinted at something special – but the PSL has a way of reminding new teams just how ruthless it can be. On Tuesday night, the euphoria dimmed slightly when Siwelele travelled to the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto and suffered their first top-flight defeat, losing 1-0 to fellow newcomers Orbit College FC from Rustenburg.
While Siwelele were tasting the highs and lows of PSL life, Bloemfontein’s other team, Marumo Gallants, were quietly making a statement of their own. Saturday saw them edge Richards Bay FC 2-1 away from home – the perfect first step in the Alexandre Laffite era. Then, on Tuesday night, they lit up a capacity Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, stunning a star-studded Orlando Pirates 2-1 with a 92nd-minute strike from Jaisen Clifford that reignited Saturday’s atmosphere.

On Tuesday (19/8), Siwelele head to Atteridgeville to face Polokwane City, while on Wednesday, Marumo travel to Durban to take on AmaZulu.
For now, Bloemfontein is back on the football map. The songs are louder, the crowds are bigger, and the city’s football heartbeat – silent for too long – is pounding again. – MORGAN PIEK
