Renowned South African adventurer and mountaineer, Sibusiso Vilane, will be tackling his next adventure when he takes on the 2017 Cape Epic in the Western Cape.
Vilane will compete in the grueling mountain bike race for the first time and is looking forward to the new challenge.
It is also Vilane’s first big challenge since the fateful Kilimanjaro expedition earlier this year, in which the South African rally champion, Gugu Zulu, lost his life.
While the wounds are still fresh, Vilane, told Courant that he will be drawing on Zulu’s memory and wise words for strength and inspiration.
“When we were climbing Kilimanjaro before his unfortunate passing I had mentioned that I was going to be doing the Cape Epic next year.
“He and his wonderful wife, Letshego, were telling be that ‘you need to spend hours and hours on the bike. Train very seriously.
“It’s a tough race but with enough preparation you can do it.
“I will probably remember his words when I’m riding in the Cape Epic and I will probably be drawing strength from that discussion I had with him earlier this year,” he said.
The 2017 Cape Epic takes place from 19 to 26 March.
