SARS dismisses hacking claims

South African Revenue Service (SARS) has denied claims that its systems were breached following allegations by an apparent hacker group over the weekend.

In a statement, SARS said it had conducted a thorough investigation after the claims surfaced and found no evidence that its systems had been compromised. “SARS continuously monitors its systems for any suspicious activity. These claims are false and unsubstantiated,” the organisation said.

The revenue service reassured the public that the integrity of its systems remains intact and stressed that protecting taxpayer information and securing its digital platforms remain a top priority.

SARS also urged members of the public not to circulate unverified information or rely on unofficial sources.
The organisation further warned the public to remain alert to scams and phishing attempts, particularly messages falsely claiming to be from SARS.
