REFILWE GAESWE

Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality said they have applied reasonable water tariffs increase for residents.

According to Mangaung Mayoral Committee member of Finance, Nthabiseng Mokotjo, they want people to start saving water as it is a scares resource and a basic commodity. The municipality will implement prepaid water meters that will assist in monitoring water consumption.

She said the less people use water, the less their tariffs will be. Mokotjo’s comment comes after media reports surfaced that rate shock awaited for Mangaung’s water users. She explained that if a resident uses water abundantly for a swimming pool, they will be expected to pay more. Mokotjo further clarified that water tariffs have increased by 9.29 percent for 2015/16.

“If you use your water between 0.6 kilolitres and I’m not even going to talk about people who are registered indigent, as they receive water for free but if you are a normal resident who has to pay and you use o.6 kilolitres, you are going to pay R6,52. It increases depending on your usage,” he said.

Mokotjo explained that Mangaung remains the cheapest compared to other metros.
