Ramaphosa mourns Adams and Makwedini

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his condolences to the families, friends and sporting communities of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams and former South Africa Under-18 rugby prop Luqobo Makwedini, following the announcement of their deaths on Saturday (11/07).

Adams (25), who recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was found deceased at his home in Cape Town. Makwedini (20) reportedly suffered cardiac arrest during a training session with his France-based rugby club.

Expressing his sympathy, Ramaphosa described the loss of the two promising athletes as a tragedy for the nation. “It is particularly tragic that we are suffering the loss of two outstanding young athletes at a time when our nation continues to immerse itself in the FIFA World Cup tournament, as well as the Springboks’ and Springbok Women’s matches against Scotland and the USA Eagles in Pretoria today,” the President said.
