Production at Sparta Foods in Welkom is expected to resume today after a pipe burst late Friday afternoon releasing toxic fumes. Sparta’s spokesperson Niel Venter says employees were safely evacuated and some were transported to hospital. According to him only two employees are still being treated for toxic inhalation at the St. Helena Private Hospital in the city. He says the situation is under control and some affected employees are still recovering at home.
The plant has been declared safe by the pollution control company, Hazquip, and employees have been decleared fit by paramedics to resume work today.
OFM News broke the news at the weekend that about 300 on site employees were evacuated while more than 60 employees where transported to various hospitals in the city. Venter says contaminated meat products were loaded onto sealed trucks and will be safely disposed after it had been exposed to toxic fumes.
