Five suspects were arrested for possession of cables valued at approximately R7 000, believed to belong to a telecommunications company.
It is alleged that one of the suspects identified himself as an employee of the Mangaung Metro Municipality as they were using a vehicle belonging to the municipality.
According to the Free State SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the discovery of the cables was made by members of the Mangaung Metro DOCC Crime Combating Unit while they were patrolling the R702.
They immediately turned back as they spotted a white NP 200 Nissan bakkie heavily loaded with people sitting at the back on top of a cargo and stopped the suspects near the Mangaung Maximum Prison entrance.
“When approaching the vehicle, the members immediately noticed the vehicle belongs to Mangaung Metro Municipality,” said Makhele. He explained that a stack of rolled uncut cables with other small pieces were discovered at the back of the bakkie.
The police arrested the suspects for possession of presumably stolen cables and they will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 14 October.
