World-renowned founder of music group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Dr Joseph Shabalala, has reportedly passed away at a Pretoria hospital.
Shabalala was battling with his health since his retirement from the multi-Grammy award winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo group.
He was admitted to a Durban hospital in December and was then transferred to another hospital in Gauteng later.
The isicathamiya musician, who would have been 78 years old this year, retired in 2017. Last year, he received a special visit from President Cyril Ramaphosa at his home in Ladysmith.
Ramaphosa stressed how it was important to honour the country’s musical icons.
“He has been flying the South African flag high.”
Ladysmith has collaborated with musicians such as Paul Simon and Dolly Parton.
