Bloemfontein. – Free State Health MEC Benny Malakoane told a media briefing in Bloemfontein yesterday that he’s well aware of the problems in his department and insisted that he knows what needs to be done.
The department has been placed under provincial administration which resulted in provincial treasury assisting them in regulating financial practices.
Malakoane says his department will need an additional R4 billion to make sure health services are rendered across the province. This comes after patients have been complaining about the lack of services at various hospitals in the province.
“It took my officials six months to go into each facility to check what is needed, the number of people, medicine, equipment, and population statistics. To come back and say for these institutions you need one, two three, four and we costed it and that’s how we came to the R4 billion extra. And I was serious about that, I don’t joke about people’s lives, I’m in that game.”
