Lehlohonolo Percival Nakedi, 54, who was the general manager responsible for mechanical services, is expected to hand himself over to a correctional facility in Bloemfontein to start his 10-year prison sentence this morning.
He was given a 10-year sentence for corruption, eight years for fraud, eight for money laundering and seven years for contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Second Amendment Act, suspended for three years in 2014 by the Bloemfontein Regional Court reports the Government News Agency.
The sentences will run concurrently.
The conviction followed Nakedi’s role in the procurement of tracking devices for municipal vehicles in the Mangaung Local Municipality (MLM).
Instead of procuring the devices from a local supplier for a quarter of the price, Nakedi and others procured the items from companies based in Gauteng for more than R19 million in exchange for kickbacks.
Nakedi reportedly received no less than R230,000 between April and October 2004.
