Bloemfontein – Godfrey Tenoff, University of the Free State’s coach, says his side’s second-half performance in the Varsity Football match played on Monday night at the Shimla Park at UFS was the best of the season thus far.
Kovsies claimed a much needed 2-0 win over the University of the Limpopo, thanks to second-half goals from midfielder Lehlohonolo Mokoena and replacement Jay Jay Groenewald.
Tenoff said although his troops seemed nervous playing in front of the home crowd, they had to give their all to produce good results.
“It was a good game. We started off a bit slow, but in the second-half it was much faster. The crowd was good and I am glad the boys did not disappoint,” he told Courant Sport.
Tenoff also lauded the performance of Groenewald, adding that it was ideal time to bring him on in the second-half to seal the victory.
“Jay Jay has been hungry the whole week in training, and he came on and performed well. He did well for himself and the team, so I am happy that he played well,” Tenoff added.
Kovsies will travel to Cape Town to face the University of Western Cape and Tenoff expects his troops to pick up where they left off.
“We’re away to UWC and therefore have to keep our minds focused to the task at hand. The performance was good, but we need to set ourselves goals for the upcoming clash.”
“It is not going to be easy, but we need to prepare for it,” he concluded.
Victory moved Kovsies to the fourth spot with three points while UL remained at the seventh spot.
