We’re all feeling a lot of stress in the office these days. A Bloomberg study revealed that South Africa is the second most-stressed country in the world. Another global study by Ipsos and Reuters also revealed more than half of South Africans do not take their annual leave. This is a contributor to stress in the office. One of the biggest culprits of high turnover, low engagement and stagnant teams is excessive stress.

Companies like Mars Multisales Africa are turning to creative ways to increase staff morale and help relieve the stress that their associates are dealing with. According to research 94% of heart patients with pets survive heart attacks, compared to 72% without pets. The research has also revealed that people who share their homes with pets have healthier physiologic responses to stress. Mars is striving to use the health benefits of dog ownership to achieve an ideal work life balance, which is one of the top determining factors for a great place to work in South Africa.

With this in mind, Mars is embarking on Take Your Dog To Work Week – 19 to 23 June – to make for a fun and stress free working environment. They believe bringing your dog in the office can offer a sense of comfort, relieve stress, increase physical activity and even improve productivity and happiness.

The top five areas of improvements as a result of implementing pet-friendly policies include:

1) employee morale (93 percent)
2) reduced stress among employees (93 percent)
3) work-life balance (91 percent)
4) greater loyalty to the company (91 percent)
5) reduced guilt among pet owners about leaving their pets at home (91 percent)
