The Free State department of health has successfully launched the new Children’s Heart Procedure Lab (Paediatric Cardiology Cath Lab) at Universitas Academic Hospital in an investment of R33 million.
The state-of-the-art facility forms part of ongoing efforts to revolutionise healthcare by making it more accessible, technologically advanced, and safer for patients.
Using minimally invasive procedures, doctors can now treat certain heart conditions through tiny tubes inserted into a vein instead of performing major surgery.
The technology means less pain, smaller scars, and, in many cases, children can return home on the same day.
Supported by trained paediatric heart specialists and child sized equipment, the new cath lab is expected to significantly improve the quality and safety of cardiac care for children across the Free State.
