President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a comprehensive migration management strategy aimed at strengthening border security, enforcing immigration laws, combating corruption and addressing illegal immigration in South Africa.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over illegal immigration, rising anti-immigrant protests and increased pressure on government to strengthen enforcement measures.
Addressing the nation on Sunday (06/07), Ramaphosa said the plan was adopted by Cabinet last week and endorsed by the President’s Coordinating Council. “Our objective is clear. We want a South Africa where every person who enters the country does so lawfully, where immigration laws are respected and enforced, where businesses compete fairly, where communities feel safe and secure, and where we remain true to our constitutional values and commitment to human dignity,” he said.
The strategy is built on five pillars which focuses on enforcing immigration and labour laws, preventing illegal entry, eliminating corruption within the immigration system, strengthening immigration policies, and improving cooperation with regional and continental partners to address migration challenges.
Government says the plan will create a more effective and coordinated migration system while balancing security, economic growth and human rights obligations.
