The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) MEC Thabo Meeko and HOD Dr. Mbulelo Nokwequ have embarked on an compliance operation this past weekend. Spearheaded by Destea’s Consumer Protection Inspection Directorate in conjunction with SARS, and South African Police Service at Mokwallo in Vredefort in the Free State.
According to Destea packages of toilet paper that did not meet compulsory specifications and Schedule 2 medication that should only be sold from the pharmacy were found in local shops during the operation.
“Illicit cigarettes have been confiscated, and the cases of contravening Consumer Protection Act Medicine, substances and Counterfeit Goods Acts have been opened,” Destea said.
