Ofentse Vinger from Rocklands, Mangaung, is not only a comedian, student and motivational speaker but also a burgeoning humanitarian through his sanitary towels initiative.
The Central University of Technology (CUT) student took a taxi to Bainsvlei Combined School recently to donate packets of pads to female learners in need.
According to Vinger he did this not because he was better off but to prove to himself and others that caring for the needs of one another is important. “I would like to motivate and inspire others to do something for the community because we all need each other. I would like for other young people to realise that they do not have to be rich to give back because the little that you can give is already enough,” explained Vinger.
The youngster performed at Macufe recently and considers his love for comedy a major part of his life. “I have always loved to make people happy and comedy is a great way for me to achieve that,” he stated.
Vinger has donated to four schools in Mangaung out of his own pocket since he began his sanitary towels drive in June.
He chose this cause as he felt that it was wrong for learners to miss school just because they were in need of pads, so he decided to make a difference. “Sanitary towels are a need for girls and when some of them are unable to attend school because they do not have them they miss school. They become embarrassed and might end up failing. So I hope that I can motivate them,” said Vinger.
Principal Bulane Kaneli thanked Vinger for his contribution to the school while teacher Nnini Setlare commended him for his effort. “Many of our children are from surrounding farms and are in dire need. Today the grade 7 girls received pads,” she said. – Nomaqhawe Mtebele
