A 15-year-old Bloemfontein learner and author, Reikantse Manaka, recently took part in the globally celebrated online virtual summit: Girls Speak Out 2020 International Day of the Girl (IDG), which was hosted by and held at the United Nations’ Headquarters in New York.
The summit took place on 11 October 2020 and commemorated girls’ stories, experiences and creative work advocating for girls rights. Manaka’s video was selected by the IDG team after she had been taking part in the virtual Women’s Month celebration organised by the Methodist Church of Southern African Women’ Union on the topic “The world girls want”.
Reikantse spoke on the topic “You are a girl – be bold”. Her focus point was the equity for girls and a call on government to take action to end all forms of violence against girls, as well as to empower girls to reach their full potential. According to her, it was an amazing experience where she was part of 1000 international submissions.
“On the other hand, it was an interesting learning experience. I got to learn from other girls around the world. At the same time, I am proud that I could represent young South African girls at the summit,” she said.
Reikantse has plans to start teaming up with community members and relevant stakeholders to organise a girls’ summit that will take place locally at schools and children ministries at churches.
