Excitement was running high this morning, when women from all over Bloemfontein came together at Tempe, to kick off women’s month by celebrating who they are and embracing their natural hair at the GloLooks natural hair affair.

Refilwe Xaba from GloLooks, told Bloemfontein Courant that it all started, when women started asking questions and wanting more information about the do’s and don’ts and the different products to be used for their hair and that is where the theme of today’s affair was born: ‘the past and the present’.

She says they were deliberate in choosing August for their event because it is Women’s Month as they are a women focused company with values that include accepting, loving yourself and really just being who you are.

“Today’s event touched on children’s hair and the relationship of mother and daughters with hair at the center of it because if we can start with young ladies embracing their natural hair, it will help with their self-esteem and accepting themselves,” she said.

One of the attendees, Nishana Wilson, explained that she attended the event because she wanted to hear what the women of the past did to maintain their natural hair and to gain more knowledge about natural hair. “I embraced my natural hair about two years ago, after getting countless comments about how thick my hair is and how I need to relax it. I just really want to show young girls that they are beautiful just the way they are,” said Wilson.

Wilson further said that GloLooks styled her natural hair for her graduation and that showed her that women are capable of doing powerful things, when they embrace their natural self.
