Woman to appear in court for stolen medicines

A 56 year old Sonti Monatisa from Welkom will appear at the Welkom Magistrate Court on 28 July this year for possession of suspected stolen medicines.

Free State Police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng confirmed Monatisa’s arrest and explained that she was found in possession of alleged stolen medicines that amounts to R20 000.

“The various medicines that were found hidden are ARV’s which were found hidden inside the fridge. Other medicines include TB medicines, heart disease medicines and children medicines. Police members who arrested the woman are the Welkom K9 Unit and the Welkom Flying Squad. We can confirm that Monatisi has been released on bail,” he said.

Thakeng said Monatisi’s bail amount is still unclear.

Meanwhile, the provincial department of health’s HOD David Motau told the media on Tuesday that they are going to strengthen their security by making the department no longer allowed medication to leave the department’s premises without proper procedures. Motau said there have been incidents of sporadic incidents of stolen medicines and medical consumables around the province.
