Wits knock Chiefs out, Pirates stun United

LEE KHOTLELE

Bloemfontein – Wits beat Kaizer Chiefs 4-2 on penalties to secure their place in Nedbank Cup final where they will lock horns with Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in the other semi-final which was played at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

The Clever Boys, who hosted the defending champions at the Bidvest Stadium over the weekend, took the lead in the 23rd minute courtesy of Sibusiso Vilakazi’s penalty after he was brought down by the Amakhosi goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, in the penalty area.

Chiefs’ striker Katlego Mphela, however, levelled matters from the penalty spot 14 minutes later after man of the match, George Maluleka, was also fouled inside the box.

The teams headed into the half-time break all square.

The home side regained the lead two minutes into the second stanza, thanks to former Chiefs striker, Sthembiso Ngcobo.

Great persistence by Bernard Parker down the left flank saw the ball fall favourably for Kingston Nkhatha, who in turn handed it on a silver-platter to Maluleka found the back on an empty net.

Deadlocked at 2-2 after regulation time and the added 30 minutes of extra time, the match had to be decided on penalties.

Vilakazi, Ryan Champman, Getaneh Kebede and Onismor Bhasera scored for the Students while Bernard Parker and Maluleka found the back of the net for Amakhosi, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Simphiwe Tshabalala missing their spot kicks.

In Pietermaritzburg, Mario Booysen scored an own goal before Mpho Makola gave the Buccaneers a two-goal lead. However, substitute Terrance Mandaza pulled one back for the Team of Choice.
