The boxer, Winston, is in need of urgent surgery to save his life. The Bloemfontein Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) took Winston in last week after he had been brought to them by a concerned community member who saw children walking with Winston in an informal settlement in Ladybrand and realised that the dog was injured. She saw that the dog was limping an on closer inspection, observed the animal had multiple scars and wounds on his body and head.
According to the organisation, the children explained to the lady that they saw Winston fall from a bakkie, which resulted in him breaking his leg and sustaining injuries. “The lady saw that the children were lying as the wounds were already infected and the leg severely swollen.
According to her, she picked up that the dog had been involved in a dog fight. This is a big accusation, however, it is clear that the dog had been in some sort of fight,” said the organisation. The SPCA also found severe open wounds on his ears as well as bite marks on his face, legs and body.
After she had taken in Winston and saw the condition the animal was in, she took him to the Bfn SPCA where he is currently being cared for. The organisation said Winston needs urgent medical treatment for infection and a severely bad broken leg. The operation and treatment costs for Winston will amount to R9 000. R2 000 has already been donated by the concerned lady towards his operation. The Bfn SPCA has asked for the help of community members.
