Bloemfontein. – The suspended Wilgehof Primary School teacher, found guilty of racism by the SA Human Rights Commission, will not appear before a disciplinary committee of the Free State education department today.
Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba says Lenard Mac Kay’s lawyers sent the department a letter two days ago, stating the he was ill.
"I can confirm that the Leonard MacKay was to appear before a disciplinary hearing of the department this morning, but we received a letter from his lawyers two days ago that he is not well. As a result, we postponed the case until the 6th of December," Ndaba said.
The Human Rights Commission found Mac Kay guilty of racism and hate speech after investigating a complaint laid by a parent regarding Mac Kay’s attitude towards black learners at Wilgehof.
Meanwhile, the school’s principal, Fanie Roelofzze, who was suspended alongside Mac Kay for dereliction of duty, is to appear before the same disciplinary committee next week.
"Fanie Roelofzze did appear before a disciplinary committee of the department on the 5th of October and that case has also been postponed till the 19th and 20th of this month," Ndaba added.
