The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport will open the newly upgraded N5 Traffic Control Centre (TCC) in Senekal on Tuesday. This will be part of the department’s Provincial Transport Month Campaign to be launched on the same day.
The N5 Traffic Control Centre has been upgraded to a more technologically advanced weighbridge in partnership with the South African Roads Agency (Sanral). According to a statement the upgrade aims to help prevent overloading of vehicles as well as improve safety on roads.
“Overloading of vehicles has resulted in a marked deterioration of provincial road networks,” said spokesperson Hillary Mophethe.
“Illegally loaded vehicles will be identified through weigh-in- motion equipment installed on the N5. Overloaded vehicles will then be diverted to be weighed on static scales at the Traffic Control Centre for mass certification and prosecution in cases of overloading,” added Mophethe.
This comes after a weighbridge was upgraded earlier this year in July at a traffic control centre outside Kroonstad.
MEC Sam Mashinini will launch the campaign at 08:00 at the Indoor Sports Centre in Senekal on 8 October 2019.
