‘We cannot wait for Monday’s first match’ – Uys

The 2024 Varsity Cup kicks off on Monday afternoon with what promises to be thrilling opening round of the competition.

Bloemfontein is set for a double-header of action with the University of the Free State Shimlas as well as the Central University of Technology Ixias playing at home.

The Shimlas will look to go one step further this season after losing back-to-back home semi-finals in their two previous campaigns. On paper the Shimlas are arguably the most experienced team and this could count in their favour.

At 16:45, the Shimlas will tackle the University of Cape Town Ikeys at Shimla Park in the opening game.

The Shimlas captain, Pierre Uys, told OFM Sport that they are ready and excited.

“We are excited for the new campaign and I think that the players are very eager to get out on the field,” said Uys.

“We have a great preseason with a good warm-up game against the Puk (NWU Eagles) in Vrede.

“I believe that we as a team are well prepared and we cannot wait for Monday’s first match.”

At 19:00, the Ixias will welcome the Orange Army of the University of Johannesburg to CUT Park.

At the same time, the University of the Western Cape will face Wits in Bellville, while the University of Stellenbosch Maties will host the champions, the North West University Eagles in Stellenbosch.
