Marketing has played a remarkable role in helping OFM to evolve from Radio Oranje to the station it is today. This is according to Lindiwe Mtwentula, marketing manager of OFM.

“Positioning statements have changed over the years, from the biggest hits from the 80s, 90s and 00s, to Central South Africa’s number one, and now The Sound of Your Life. Each change in positioning has spoken to the maturity of the station.”

Over the years the OFM logo has evolved not only in shape, but also in colour. It has changed from orange to black and red, back to orange, and then orange and purple to the now famous red, blue and yellow. The recent logo change, with the frequency band of 94 to 97 FM being removed from the look and feel, has been influenced by the fact that OFM is not only a regional powerhouse but freely available online, with 394 000 unique connections via multiple streamed services being registered in May 2021 alone,” says Mtwentula.

She adds that not only has OFM released numerous compilation CDs featuring the best music from the OFM playlists and sold thousands of copies in return, the station has also brought the most popular adult contemporary artists to perform in the region. The likes of Rodriquez, Westlife, Ronan Keating, Bananarama, Will Young and Smokie. OFM has been part of Central South Africa’s biggest arts festivals in Upington, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Bothaville, Potchefstroom, Vanderbijlpark and Ficksburg.

“OFM has partnered, sponsored and supported all four professional rugby teams in Central South Africa to Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup success. The same can be said for the three cricket franchises frequently winning domestic honours. OFM has also been the owner of the fourth biggest cycling event in South Africa.

“With all this community involvement OFM is mostly inspired by our listeners who are so passionate and loyal to us. We are what we are because of the hundreds and thousands of beautiful listeners. As we celebrate 35 years, we can only think of the bright future we have ahead of us with great anticipation,” Mtwentula concluded.
