Residents in Uitsig, Fleurdal, Gen. De Wet, Hospitaalpark, and Fichardt Park are facing an increase in municipal water meter thefts, with criminals targeting properties in the early morning hours.
According to Fauna Family Association Chairperson Ruan van Wyk, thieves shut off stop valves during the day or early evening to determine if homeowners notice the disruption. If no reaction is observed, they return later to steal the water meters, along with copper pipes and stop valves, selling them as scrap metal.
Van Wyk has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. “If you see individuals loitering near water meters or sitting on pavements for extended periods, notify your neighbourhood watch or contact the police,” he said.
The rising thefts have prompted local councillors to call for an urgent meeting with law enforcement and the MMC for Public Safety. The discussions will focus on implementing measures to curb this crime and regulating scrap metal businesses in Mangaung.
“This problem is spreading fast and could soon affect more areas, including Fauna. We need to work together as a community to prevent further incidents,” Van Wyk added.
