Water and Sanitation reaches out to communities to celebrate Global Handwashing Day

Celebrated annually on 15 October, Global Handwashing Day is a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

Global Handwashing Day aims to encourage a culture of handwashing with soap. Global Handwashing Day also aims to educate people about the benefits of handwashing with soap.

This year the theme is ‘United for Universal Hand Hygiene’. The theme highlights the need for all to work together in harmony to achieve effective hand hygiene.

The Free State Department of Water and Sanitation is conducting end user education and awareness on health and hygiene in the month of October. The Department will be conducting the campaigns at small towns of Dealesville, Jagersfontein, Bultfontein, Vrede and Heilbron to promote health and hygiene awareness, water conservation, and also to encourage the communities to take care of infrastructure and report any kind of vandalism to water infrastructure.

As the Department of Water and Sanitation is mandated to promote good sanitation, the initiative to promote Handwashing Day also builds strong and good alliances with external stakeholders, such as the Department of Health.

Although Handwashing Day is celebrated annually, the department encourages that proper health and hygiene be practiced daily, to combat the spread of diseases. In also practicing safe hygiene, the Department of Water and Sanitation reiterates that water should be used sparingly, as water is still a precious and scarce resource.
