Watch: Bfn community members loot metres away from police station

A video has been circulating on social media this morning showing members of the community looting and taking goods from a local vendor situated just a few metres from the Heidedal police station.

This as the shutdown protests have been continuing this morning. Protests started last night in Dr Belcher Road when residents took to the streets burning tyres and barricading the road with rocks. Protesters are calling for the disbandment of the Mangaung Metro Council for numerous reasons, including service delivery, job opportunities and more.

The video shows members looting a street vendor situated in Heidedal. Members can be seen carrying goods, such as bags of potatoes, from the vendor. The street vendor is situated just a few metres away from the Heidedal police station.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, said there are many incidents currently taking place around Mangaung and police will issue one statement on everything during the day. “We can’t respond to isolated issues and it will also depend if there are any cases opened with the police. We can’t respond to any matter not reported to us or which we are investigating,” said Makhele.

According to him, members of the police at the Heidedal police station are not aware of the incident as no reports or cases have been opened on the matter.

This is a developing story.
