Victim of lioness attack identified

The victim of the Lioness attack on a farm in the district of Glen in the Free State was identified.

Following claims by the Bloemfontein SPCA about incorrect statements regarding their euthanising of the lioness, police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle clarified that preliminary information indicated the SPCA euthanised the lioness. However, the SPCA did not euthanize the lioness, contrary to the previous police report.

“With some developments in the investigation, it has come to light that the lioness was injured in the attempt to save the victim and had to be put down. She was sedated before one of the workers on the farm had to put her down,” said Earle.

She added that the police were called to the scene and found the body of Mr Mataka Jere with severe injuries and he was declared dead on the scene.

“The police are continuing with the investigation into the death of Mr Jere.”
