The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued a Fire Danger Index (FDI) for 4 September. The FDI warning for parts of Mangaung reflected a red indicator for extreme danger.
The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) confirmed that windy conditions could cause veld fires, which might cause difficulty for drivers’ visibility due to smoke, damage to infrastructure and illnesses because of smoke inhalation.
The municipality urged land owners, farmers and all residents to be cautious for the next few days. MMM cautioned residents that no open fires or flames are allowed in the veld and precautions should be taken while work like welding or grinding is in session.
