Vaal Dam stabilising but Bloemhof levels rising

SABRINA DEAN – While the inflow to the Vaal Dam has dropped significantly since Monday, inflow into Bloemhof Dam remains very high.
This is according to Water Affairs Acting Director General Trevor Balzer, who says they continue to monitor the situation around the clock to minimise possible flood damage as much as possible.
"We are down by 50% on the inflow that we had into the Vaal Dam on Monday this week so hopefully we will see a turn, with the dam level maybe dropping…
"But the Bloemhof Dam is at 95%. Inflow there is still at 1100 cubic metres per second and currently our outflow is at 540 cubic metres per second," he says.
Balzer says they will probably increase the outflow at Bloemhof to around 700 cubic metres per second today, which will increase the risk to communities downstream of the dam.
He says water is also currently being released from the Gariep and Vanderkloof Dams.
