The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) has released a statement to clarify that the city’s quality of tap water is safe for human consumption.

This comes after concerns were raised by residents regarding the discolouration of tap water in parts of the municipality.

According to MMM spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, the metro and the city’s water service provider, Vaal Central Water, conducted comprehensive tests and investigations into the matter to establish the source of discolouration (residual).

“Reticulation systems in all affected areas such as Fleurdal, Uitsig, Universitas, Langenhoven Park, General De Wet and adjacent areas are being monitored, sampled and scoured, to ensure compliance with South African National Standards (SANS) 241, which is the main water standard measurement for human consumption and tap water. The colour of water has started to clear in several affected areas,” said Khedama.

He added that the metro will constantly update the community on the progress. “The city apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
