University of the Free State will no longer deregister the 195 students that were affected by the Motsepe Bursary scam.

Spokesperson Lacea Loader said there are 36 students who still haven’t received financial assistance. Initially it was indicated that the university was giving the affected students till 30 June. This after, Motsepe Foundation issued a warning in May this year about a scam targeting higher learning institutions after some students presented fraudulent bursary confirmation letters, allegedly with the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s letter head and the foundation’s logo, to the UFS, Boston College, Motheo FET College, Central University of Technology and Damelin.

“Most of the students received potential assistance. There are potential solutions for the remaining 36 students who could not receive financial assistance and we will know soon if this will materialize. It is however sad and disappointing that our students were misled this way, but we are thankful that the remaining student might be able to find financial support in order for them to continue with their studies,” she says.

Loader said they are cooperating with the Motsepe Foundation regarding the matter.
